From the Native Tongue Posse to Wu-Tang Clan to Odd Future Wolf Gang, hip-hop collectives have always been a vital part of the culture. Not only do most of these collectives have longevity in the game, but they also represent for hip-hop in the broader society. Rap groups, with their often cult-like followings, frequently spawn members who thrive in multiple entertainment lanes, such as rappers/actors Queen Latifah, Method Man, and Tyler, the Creator.

But the 2000s era star-factory from Atlanta, Georgia known as “The Dungeon Family” hasn’t always received the recognition that fans know it deserves. The DF collective of rappers, singers, producers, DJs and poets includes originals Big Boi, Andre 3000, Rico Wade, Ray Murray, Sleepy Brown, BackBone, Cool Breeze, Cee Lo Green, Khujo Goodie, T-Mo, Big Gipp, Big Rube, Witch Doctor, Mr DJ and Joi (with a second generation of artists like Killer Mike, Slimm Calhoun, Janelle Monae, Bubba Sparxxx and Future).

These artists are responsible not only for a huge influence on hip-hop’s past, but also for putting out a crazy amount of music in the modern era. Big Boi of OutKast has released two solo albums and a collaborative EP with Phantogram as Big Grams. Cee Lo Green from Goodie MOB has put out four solo albums and won awards as part of Gnarls Barkley. OutKast protege Killer Mike is now one half of flame-spitting duo Run the Jewels. Organized Noize produced hits like “Waterfalls” by TLC, “So Fresh, So Clean” by OutKast, “Saturday” by Ludacris and the Set It Off soundtrack, and recently starred in Netflix documentary “The Art of Organized Noize.
