On a warm summer afternoon in July, Large Professor was in Oakland at Hiero HQ, performing a much-awaited set at Wax Poetic. The mood of the day party was chill, but an excited buzz swept the crowd when Large Professor stepped up, displaying the skills and talent that made him a legendary artist and producer in New York. He played a mix of tracks, from his solo work, collabs, and his contemporaries, incluyding Akyneli, Tribe Called Quest, Slum Village, D.I.T.C. Crew and Boot Camp Clik.
“I’m always working. I’m always — this is just kind of keeps me alive. I don’t care if a record comes out or it doesn’t. This is just what I do” – Large Pro
Large Professor also paid homage to Prodigy, with tracks off of Mobb Deep’s Infamous, in a set that was both cathartic and compelling.
He even included a few more recent tracks.
Mostly, however, he stuck to projects that were sure to spark nostalgia with the crowd, although he did bless the Wax Poetic crowd with an impromptu freestyle.
Wax Poetic is a day party put on Hiero Crew, with a goal of showcasing dope hip hop that doesn’t always get the radio play it deserves. Large Pro brought that spirit with him, rocking nothing but the best, and sharing his love of music with the crowd.
