A while back I covered Kevin Allen’s listening party and upcoming album, The Kevin Allen Project. Since then, SBVRSL has been following this artist’s transition from his fka (Erk tha Jerk) to his birth name, Kevin Allen. In October he dropped his highly anticipated first album under his new moniker.
It takes faith to change your name as an artist. It takes a belief in your ability to reach people beyond whatever past persona they became attached to… Do they fuck with the REAL you? Kevin Allen took this leap of faith last year, letting go of his former identity and releasing new album The Kevin Allen Project. The album was well received by long-time fans, and before long they started asking when they would get a chance to hear it live. So, never one to disappoint, Kevin gave them the show they were waiting for at the Uptown nightclub in Downtown Oakland on January 11th. This venue provided the perfect setting and sound as it always does. The amazing DJ Slowpoke held it down from minute one, bringing the crowd in with classic jams and new slaps. DNAS manned the mic and kept it all-Oakland as he welcomed Kevin Allen’s supporting artists, emcees Mani Draper and Ali J.
This was some marvelous shit, y’all. The turnout was amazing. Seeing so many people show up and support local artists is always the BEST feeling. Ali J and Mani Draper kicked off the vibe just right. These artists have dope stage presence and their individual musical styles added the perfect blend of flavor to the night.
When it was time for the Man of The Hour, Kevin Allen, not only did the band open up with the CLASSIC “Freddie’s Dead” by the legendary Curtis Mayfield, but SUPERFLY was playing on a screen behind him. This was some grown man shit. Kevin made his way out to the stage (with a glass of red wine in hand) and the crowd went crazy. He lit incense on a little shrine & sat down behind a keyboard…Wait, Kevin Allen can play the keys???
Kevin proceeded to give one of the BEST shows I have ever seen! The band was rocking, Kevin’s delivery was raw, vulnerable, real as fuck. Musically and aesthetically, it was on-point. His attention to small details made for a BIG show experience. What a way to kick off 2018! But the BEST part about it all is that this is just the beginning. Kevin Allen announced on social media over the weekend that this was the first EPISODE of more Kevin Allen shows to come. Man, I can’t wait to see what he brings to the next show! Make sure to check back here for the latest on this show series and other #flyynews.
